Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?
During your evaluation, David Fowope, PMHNP-BC will conduct a comprehensive clinical interview covering your mental health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, relationships, past treatments, and personal goals. The session is collaborative, unhurried, and completely judgment-free. Most evaluations last 60 to 90 minutes. You will leave with a clear diagnostic formulation and a personalized treatment plan.
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
Our psychiatric evaluations typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your clinical presentation. We intentionally schedule sufficient time to ensure a thorough, unhurried assessment — because we believe proper evaluation cannot be rushed. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete any remaining intake paperwork.
What should I bring to my evaluation?
Please bring a list of your current medications (including dosages), any previous psychiatric or psychological records if available, your insurance information, and a list of your primary concerns and questions. If you are bringing a child or adolescent, a parent or legal guardian must accompany them. Our coordinator will provide a full preparation checklist when they confirm your appointment.
Will I receive a diagnosis at the end of the evaluation?
In most cases, yes. At the conclusion of your evaluation, David Fowope will share his clinical formulation, which includes a diagnosis (when applicable), a clear explanation of your findings, and a personalized treatment plan. In some complex cases, additional sessions or assessments may be recommended before a final diagnostic formulation is provided. We will always be transparent about next steps.
Is the evaluation confidential?
Absolutely. All clinical information shared during your evaluation is fully protected under HIPAA regulations and our strict patient privacy policies. Your records will never be shared without your explicit written consent, except in very limited circumstances required by law (such as imminent safety concerns). You will review and sign a detailed privacy notice before your appointment begins.
How is a psychiatric evaluation different from therapy?
A psychiatric evaluation is a clinical assessment focused on diagnosis, treatment planning, and determining whether medication management is appropriate. It is conducted by a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Therapy (psychotherapy) is an ongoing treatment modality typically provided by a licensed therapist or psychologist focused on processing emotions and developing coping strategies. The two are complementary, and we frequently coordinate care between both when appropriate.
